Happiness in Adversity

The month of August is generally celebrated as the month of happiness. It seems logical to dedicate a day or a month to proclaim as the happy month since the weather is often nice, summer vacation is in full swing, so to speak, and it has been a good month to take a cruise. However, even though the climate might cooperate for an enjoyable vacation, there is socioeconomic and geopolitical unrest, poverty, and wickedness is pervasive. The Bible indicates in Matthew 24, that toward the close of earth’s history, wickedness will abound in high places, there will be wars, famines, earthquakes, and unusual or unnatural occurrences. Globally, people are fearful and faced with one unfortunate situation after another, so how can happiness be proclaimed?

The current state of society affords Faith Community Nurses with prime opportunities to promote happiness. Psalms 144:15 (Bible, King James Version [KJV]) indicates “Happy is that people, that is in such a case, yea, happy is that people whose God is the Lord”. For the Christian and the Faith Community Nurse (FCN), happiness should be the theme of life since God has provided multiple opportunities to reflect His character and to mirror His loving kindness. As healthcare providers who proclaim Jesus as their Savior, there is a responsibility to educate and encourage others to see the goodness of God and it is possible to be happy even in the face of adversity.

If humanity cannot see the love of God being reflected in the life of the Christian healthcare provider, then their living will be in vain. Remember the last part of Nehemiah 8:10 (Bible, KJV) “…for the joy of the Lord is your strength”. The spirit of happiness can flourish because God has blessed the hands, fingers, and mind of the Christian healthcare provider and has enabled joy and happiness to be exhibited throughout their daily life.
