Working Together
As the new president of AAFCN, I look forward to working with each of you. Our journey together reminds me of the paralyzed man who was carried on a mat to Jesus—not only for physical healing but for spiritual healing as well (Mark 2:1-12). Just as it took teamwork to bring this man to Jesus, it will take teamwork to strengthen and grow the Faith Community Nursing ministry and AAFCN.
There are several key lessons we can learn from this powerful story:
Supporting Each Other: Regardless of the paralyzed man’s past, the men who carried him demonstrated unwavering support and care. We don’t know if they had known each other before, but they worked together to achieve a common goal. Likewise, in AAFCN, we may come from different backgrounds and experiences, but we must support one another as we pursue our shared mission.
Being Good Listeners: These men had to listen—to each other and to the man they carried. They needed to be aware of potential dangers, recognize when someone was fatigued, and understand the paralyzed man’s needs. Similarly, as Faith Community Nurses, we must actively listen to one another, our congregations, our pastors, and the broader community. Effective listening includes not only hearing words but also understanding unspoken needs and concerns.
Demonstrating Persistence: When they arrived at the crowded house and saw no clear path to Jesus, the men did not give up. Instead, they took an unconventional approach—lifting their friend onto the roof, removing tiles, and lowering him before Jesus. Their persistence paid off. As nurses, we, too, will face obstacles, whether in ministry, membership growth, or daily challenges. Sometimes, unconventional solutions or fresh approaches are necessary, and having a backup plan is always wise.
Staying United: These men may have had differing opinions on how to reach Jesus—perhaps debating the best route or the ideal time to leave—but they remained united in their ultimate goal. Similarly, in AAFCN, we may not always agree on every decision, but unity is crucial. Our shared mission—to expand our membership and increase awareness of the value of the Ministry of Nursing—must always take precedence over individual differences.
Guiding Others on Their Spiritual Journey: These men brought the paralyzed man to Jesus, recognizing that his spiritual healing was just as important as his physical well-being. As nurses, we acknowledge that spiritual health is a vital component of overall wellness. Our role is not only to care for physical needs but also to support individuals in their spiritual journeys, pointing them toward the Master Healer.
Our work as nurses will not always be easy. We may encounter challenges, misunderstandings, and a lack of support. However, Galatians 6:9 reminds us:
Let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.
Let us move forward together with faith, determination, and unity.
