Emergency Safety Planning & Active Shooter Awareness

Learning Objectives

Active shooter and active killer incidents are sporadic and unpredictable. Recent history indicates that houses of worship are not exempt from these episodes. Development of an emergency response plan and subsequent drills may mitigate the negative impacts and improve outcomes of health emergencies in faith communities and is supported by faith community nursing scope and standards of professional practice. Simulated emergency drills and debriefing increases the members’ preparedness for physical and mental health emergencies.

At the end of this presentation the attendee will be able to:

  • Create a safety plan for their congregation.
  • Recognize an active threat.
  • List 3 ways to respond to an active threat.
  • Deescalate the situation and triage to meet the needs identified.
  • Successfully organize and implement timely drills for the congregation.
